Frederick C. DeCoste

   Frederick C. DeCoste, Professor, B.A. (St. Dunstan's), M.S.W. (Carleton), LL.B. (Dist.) (Sask.), LL.M. (Osgoode)

Professor Frederick DeCoste teaches jurisprudence, legal foundations, and the graduate seminar at the University of Alberta, faculty of law. His articles have appeared in law journals in the United Kingdom and the United States and in legal and (occasionally) literary journals in Canada. He has authored or edited several books, most recently On Coming to Law: An Introduction to Law in Liberal Societies, Second Edition (Lexis, 2007) and The Holocaust's Ghost: Writings on Art, Politics, Law, and Education (University of Alberta Press, 2000; co-edited with Bernard Schwartz), which was awarded the 2001 Alberta Scholarly Book of the Year Award and the 2001 Canadian Society for Yad Vashem Award for Holocaust History. He is currently working on a book on the legal academy entitled Redeeming The Law School: Academic Lawyers, Limited Government, and the Passions of Tradition, that will appear in 2009.

Professor DeCoste has, in the past, been awarded a major SSHRC research grant and a McCalla Professorship. He joined the Faculty in 1987, has served as Associate Dean of Graduate Studies and Research, and is a member of the Law Society of Alberta.
